Chamber News

Chamber Update
I wanted to recognize the accomplishments listed below so that Chamber Members are aware of what is happening in both villages-if there is anything you feel I should mention please feel free to make me aware!
“Hats Off” to Terri and Peter Dawson owners of the Green Gecko,  who celebrated 10 years of being in business in the village of Lyndhurst.
“Hats Off” to the Nest Egg for a very successful 8th birthday. Serving a BBQ to over 100 valued customers, along with live music in the parking lot.
“Hats Off” Perry’s Place although not a member of the Chamber, had a very successful American Graffiti afternoon with all the antique cars down the streets.
“Hats Off” to Wings Live Bait who ran a very successfil fishing derby for kids.
“Hats Off” to the Lyndhurst Rejeuvanation Committee which ran a very successful “Ice Cream Social” ,and had over 100 people in attendance!
“Hats Off”, to the LRC again as  this group is going “mad over plaid”. Check out the plaid house in downtown Lyndhurst
“Hats Off” to Wendys Country Market
which continues to be one of the most talked about businesses by visiting tourists

Last January I made a series of proposals to Council (approved by the Chamber). One  proposal is now known as the “Spring Showcase”. The original purpose of this proposal was to stimulate the business ownership of our downtown section in both Seeley’s Bay and Lyndhurst.  The idea was to invite people from outside our area like Kingston and Ottawa, and make them aware of existing business opportunities .

Our new “Partners Initiative Group”, led by Elaine Mallory, was very supportive of this endeavour. If successful, we would possibly pursue this initiative on a larger scale in the following years. At this point, I want to clarify this is not the Chamber selling real estate, this is the Chamber bringing people into our area and making them aware of whatever real estate opportunities exist.

Through additional  discussion, members suggested expanding the real estate opportunities to residential properties and cottages. We then discussed other options such as a street sale in both villages, a central headquarter such as the Legion, possible Artisan displays, as well as a “farmers market”.

I explored advertising options and went as far as to have a radio commercial made.  It was amazing how listening to a radio commercial gave this initiative real credibility.(See attached)

There were concerns brought forward  with respect to the commitment of the real estate agents and whether or not they thought this initiative was valid. The suggestion was made at our last Chamber meeting, that I should go and speak to the real estate agents and see if they are “on board”.  I’ve done this, and I also had an insightful discussion with a Toronto Real Estate Agent who was very enthusiastic about our initiative. If the opportunity presents itself, perhaps members could speak to a real estate agent in order to get their opinion of the “Spring Showcase” initiative

As mentioned before, the  goal of this initiative is to encourage outsiders to come and look at our area and be aware of the opportunities that exist. Whether there are just 2 open houses or 22 open houses , visitors will still take note of our villages and see what opportunities might be there for them.

At our next meeting we need to decide as a group whether we move forward on the “Spring Showcase” or consider other economic development options.

COUNCILLOR LIZ HUFF

Liz Huff, Councillor, Leeds and the Thousand Islands, has been appointed by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) Board of Directors to fill a vacancy in  the Rural Caucus. As a member of the Board, Liz will help set policy for the Association and serve as a   key municipal leader in Ontario. “AMO benefits from membership from across the Province, and a Board that reflects the diversity of Ontario’s municipal governments. To that end, I am pleased to have Liz on the 2014-2016 Board team,” said Gary McNamara, AMO President. AMO’s key advocacy priorities are focused on achieving fiscal sustainability for municipal governments, advancing federal, provincial partnerships for infrastructure and strengthening municipal legislative authority to advance local economic prosperity and environmental sustainability. Lyndhurst / Seeley's Bay Chamber Chamber Moves Forward with Proposals in New Year
The first Chamber Meeting of the New Year saw an aggressive move by the members of the Lyndhurst Seeley's Bay Chamber of Commerce.
Seven proposals were discussed, motioned and accepted unanimously, and President Mel Magalas is very optimistic about going forward with such an overwhelming vote of confidence from its members.
Some of the proposals are designed to encourage more visitors to come into our region, to make our area more welcoming when they arrive, and to make them want to come back or perhaps even stay permanently. Other proposals are designed to help the small businesses in our region become better equipped to handle the future business market that is becoming more and more dependent on networking and social media.

Chamber Proposals 2015

         "Meet ‘n Greet"

Last Meet ‘n Greet organized by Ron Rudd was very successful. Chamber Vice- President,  John Sideris encouraged a round table discussion whereby Chamber members introduced themselves to one another and it definitely created an atmosphere of solidarity.

Mayor was present and gave a very uplifting speech
Opportunity to make existing members more actively involved
Opportunity to give  non members  an incentive to join
Opportunity to have members   get  to know one another and discuss common issues that  might be of interest to Chamber
Creates a better awareness about what other businesses are doing
Opportunity to hand out information about Chamber –“starter kit”
Opportunity to have  a guest speaker  talk about the commercial potential in our area

Members needed  to oversee the following:

Find a good location that is preferably owned by a Chamber member
Eg  Golf Course, Legion, Camp Hyanto, Fire Hall
Put together a “Starter Kit” that includes door decals,  copy of constitution, calendar of events and a Chamber Member list.
Include a questionnaire about what area he/she may be able to help the Chamber in upcoming events.
We will need someone to organize food and beverages
Arrange for guest speaker Eg successful entrepreneur  like Joe Pal or Economic Development Officer  eg. Tom Russell

Hall Rental                  $50
Bag Kit-printed material decals

                                 $  250
Guest Speaker        $ 200
Sub Total                 $ 500

Chamber Fishing Derby
What better way to bring more people from outside our area, than a fishing derby

In keeping with “first impressions” a Derby allows the Chamber the opportunity to promote and market the resources that we have; namely our beautiful lakes and everything that comes with that.
Opportunity for event tent as a  fund raiser
Chamber will take on the organizing of running the Derby
Recruiting of prizes will be necessary.
Local advertising will be necessary

Creating our Derby as must attend annual event, can be best done by cash prizes as well
Funds needed for Chamber  tent to act as Derby headquarters and fund raiser
Large banner to acknowledge and publicize the Derby
Each person who signs up for the Derby would pay  a registration fee that would include  a welcoming bag kit containing Derby rules, map of the area, discount coupons to local establishments. This will guarantee participants  spend money and support local establishments

Sub Total                                      1,500

Chamber Business Directory & Map Pad

This item has been discussed and approved but there is a question of additional funding
Updated information is necessary  for visiting tourists
Excellent promotional item that will benefit all Chamber members
Helps visitors become more familiar with our region and creates better awareness as to what our region offers
Volunteers from the Chamber are compiling detailed information to create a directory that focuses on Seeley’s Bay and Lyndhurst.

Contact members of the Chamber to :

Make sure Commercial establishments and other “points of interest”, are featured on this map.
Work with the printing company to get this done
Provide necessary information that is accurate and updated for printing purposes
Decide what exactly we deem necessary for printing

Lyndhurst Seeleys Bay   “Yellow Balloon Day”

Preferably a spring weekend (May long weekend) as it would serve to create interest in our area early in the season.
Should be a 2 day event
The Chamber will encourage potential new buyers of commercial real estate from outside our region into the Lyndhurst /Seeley’s Bay area. The focus will be on commercial real estate but certainly is open to other venues
Opportunity to create awareness of what our region has to offer
Promoting a specific day makes it a special event in which people who never considered our area before, would now  be aware that we exist !
This event is the first part of a five year plan, as it now becomes a way to keep in touch with potential buyers.

Enables the Chamber to periodically e-mail this group of buyers

There is also the advantage of  linking  this newly founded group of potential investors  to the Municipal Website under “Investment Opportunity”

May encourage people who have properties for sale to “spruce” them up for this day
Encourages agents to get their listings ready
Improves first impression of the area.
Could be combined with “Victoria Day in the Villages”
The Chamber has to decide which area(s) would be the most suitable target eg. Kingston, Belville,Oshawa
The Chamber will need to promote the event with lead up newspaper advertising, radio advertising, outdoor signage,
Arrange to have an interview on radio/Cogeco
Coin the special event with a catch phrase like “Yellow Balloon Day” and have yellow balloons on all identified places that are available for viewing.

The Chamber needs to address organized bus transportation, provide a luncheon, as well as  an itinerary  of places to see.
We will need to keep a data base of all those who attend and build off of that
Establish link to town website “Investment Opportunity”

Note: If one person buys something then that is alone a good reason for the Chamber to support such an event as part of a long term plan as it indicates we are going in the right direction
Advertising       *   Bus Transportation           *   Luncheon
*Miscellaneous (eg: Chamber decals with logo could be placed on bags, place settings, gift tags etc)

 Sub Total                                       $5000

     Chamber Website
The website is the face of our Chamber and as such could use a lift.
It provides the Chamber with an opportunity to show how it can play an important function in the business community and this reflects well for the Township.

The website is imperative for  communicating business related news information and  upcoming community events, to  members of the Chamber as well as the community in general
Link with township
This will involve paying a company to manage in a more professional manner
We need to improve from where we are now to a higher level of expertise!
The Chamber has three knowledgeable representatives to act as a liaison between the Website Company and the Chamber. We want to make sure that what the Chamber wants and needs gets properly communicated on the website.
Website Design

Chamber Annual Award Presentations

This would be held towards the end of the Chamber Calendar Year!

An Award Presentation Event is a common practice of many area Chambers.  All Chamber members would be invited to a dinner/dance where Community Distinction Awards would  be handed out not only to Chamber members but to those individuals who have in some way enhanced our community
Such  a major event  attempts to embrace  both Communities while recognizing the achievements of those who spend endless hours in order to create better first impressions of our community.

An award event provides a forum for the Chamber and Community to meet on a social basis.

Great opportunity for achievement recognition
An event such as this is an opportunity to promote more members getting involved
Members needed to: Arrange hall rental and appropriate décor for this event. Camp Hyanto offers a different theme approach here!
Creating a system of deciding what categories  warrant merit and deciding on what type of award to present
Arranging food and beverage suitable for a buffet style
Co-coordinating presentation and awards

Arranging for entertainment as an evening close

Hall rental            200

Provincial Funding for Seeley's Bay Media Release

Seeley’s Bay Area Residents’ Association (SBARA) and Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI)
Dec 24, 2014

RED Funding for Seeley’s Bay Steps Up

Jeff Leal, Ontario’s Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, has announced the approval of an agreement under the Rural Economic Development (RED) program for new economic revitalization work in Seeley’s Bay.  “This is terrific news,” according to Joe Baptista, Mayor of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, “the Seeley’s Bay Area Residents’ Association (SBARA) is working hard to help ensure the ongoing vitality of the community, to support local businesses and to attract new development. The grants they have obtained have meant this work has been an affordable and productive partnership for the Township.”

The Residents’ Association have been working on a multi-year initiative known as Seeley’s Bay Steps Up, with much already achieved, including upgrades to Main Street, a new park area at Haskin’s Point, a paddling station, benches in the village, and a highway billboard. This newest grant comes under a provincial funding stream that supports branding and marketing efforts.

“Our brand” according to Peggy Sweet McCumber, Chairperson of SBARA is based on three elements: First, our unique ‘place’ in the landscape, alongside the UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal and within the UNESCO Frontenac Arch Biosphere; secondly, we are a destination for healthy, affordable eco-tourism pursuits such as paddling, hiking, exploring, fishing, swimming, cabin rentals, etc.; and thirdly, we are a safe, warm, welcoming community with an old-fashioned flavour and a progressive vision.”  More...
